Scrap Vehicles
Having worked at a Discovery breakers yard for the last ten years, I have seen first hand how important it is to have proper insurance for your vehicle regardless of if it's currently in use or not. Garaged vehicles are often seen as an easy target for thieves as with them being inside they are sheltered from view while the thief attempts to start the engine. Unfortunately many people think that because they're not using the garaged vehicle they don't bother to have proper insurance for it. This means that if the vehicle is stolen, the owner will end up with having to pay to have it released from the Discovery breakers yard, along with the costs incurred from its recovery. As these costs are normally covered by the owner's insurance policy, Discovery breakers tend to charge what they like, knowing that it will be paid – this can lead to a hefty bill for an uninsured owner.
Luckily, Landrover Discovery vehicles aren't particularly popular with joy riders, but they are often stolen for criminal acts that require a larger vehicle, such as violent robberies or ram raids. Having your vehicle stolen for a ram raid is probably the worst thing that can happen to it, as many shop fronts have strengthened glass, ensuring the car is a proper wreck by the time it gets to the Discovery breakers yard.
It's not a total loss though, as your trashed vehicle may well be sold on by the Discovery breakers yard to someone for parts or refurbishment, meaning your pride and joy was not completely wasted in vain.
